Thyroglobulin

A protein that is found primarily in the thyroid gland.

Antioxidant

A substance that reduces damage due to oxygen, such as that caused by free radicals.

Apoptosis

A form of cell death in which a programmed sequence of events leads to the elimination of cells without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area.

Streptococcus, group A

A well-known strain (type) of streptococcus (strep) bacteria that can cause strep throat and common skin problems such as impetigo as well as rheumatic fever.

Streptococcus pyogenes

A common bacteria of the skin that causes strep throat (streptococcal pharyngitis), impetigo, other skin infections, rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, glomerulonephritis, and invasive fasciitis.

Stem cell harvest

Obtaining stem cells for use in cancer or other treatment. Usually the cells are removed from the patient's own bone marrow. Stem cells can be harvested from the blood or bone marrow.

Spasm

A brief, automatic jerking movement. A muscle spasm can be quite painful, with the muscle clenching tightly. A spasm of the coronary artery can cause the pain of angina.

Shock, primary

Sudden loss of blood pressure resulting in shock due to pain, fear, and other reactions experienced immediately after a severe injury.

Turbinectomy

Removal of a turbinate bone. The turbinate is a bone in the nose; it is an extension of the ethmoid bone, is situated along the side wall of the nose, and is covered by mucous membrane.
