Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Myofascial pain syndrome

A condition characterized by chronic pain in the muscle tissues, similar to fibromyalgia. MPS is sometimes the aftermath of injury.

Mixed mania

A state of mind characterized by symptoms of both mania and depression seen sometimes in bipolar disorders. It is more common in bipolar children and women.

Mitral valve prolapse

A common heart valve anomaly affecting 5-10 percent of people that involves prolapse (flopping backwards) of the mitral valve leaflets into the left atrium during contraction of the heart's ventricles

Migraine, ocular

A migraine involving the eyes that results in distortion of visual images, accompanied or followed by headache. An ocular migraine usually affects only one eye at a time.

Migraine, abdominal

An attack of abdominal pain that may be preceded by a migraine aura and accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and cognitive disturbance.

Migraine aura

A sensory phenomenon that may occur before a migraine. Visual auras may include flashing lights, geometric patterns, or distorted vision.

Menstrual irregularity

The normal menstrual cycle is about four weeks long, and often follows the phases of the moon. Its length varies from three to seven days, but is usually consistent.

Menstrual cramps

Cramping in the lower abdomen, usually in the first or second day of the menstrual cycle, that is caused by contractions of the uterus as it expels its unneeded contents and by the passage of clotted

A condition due to cancer that has spread from the original (primary) tumor to the meninges, the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord.
