Knock-knees

An abnormal curve of the legs that causes the knees to touch or nearly touch while the feet are apart.

Knee bursitis

A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that functions as a gliding surface to reduce friction between moving tissues of the body. There are three major bursae of the knee.

Kissing disease

A name for infectious mononucleosis ("mono"), a very common illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

Ketoacidosis

A feature of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus characterized by a combination of ketosis and acidosis. Ketosis is the accumulation of substances called ketone bodies in the blood.

Juvenile

Between infantile and adult. Used in medicine to indicate onset in childhood, as in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Joint hypermobility syndrome

A common benign childhood condition involving hypermobile joints (that can move beyond the normal range of motion). Symptoms include pains in knees, fingers, hips, and elbows.

Joint

The area where two bones are attached for the purpose of permitting body parts to move. A joint is usually formed of fibrous connective tissue and cartilage.

Jakob's disease

Better known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a dementing disease of the brain. It is believed due to an unconventional, transmissible agent (a prion).

Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease

A degenerative disease of the brain that causes dementia and, eventually, death. It is believed to be caused by an unconventional microbe called a prion, rather than by bacteria or a virus.
