Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Migraine, classic

Migraine with aura. Accounts for no more than most 20% of migraines. See Migraine.

Migraine

Usually, periodic attacks of headaches on one or both sides of the head.

Metastasize

The spread from one part of the body to another. When cancer cells metastasize and cause secondary tumors, the cells in the metastatic tumor are like those in the original cancer.

Metastasis

1. The process by which cancer spreads from the place at which it first arose as a primary tumor to distant locations in the body. 2. The cancer resulting from the spread of the primary tumor.

Menorrhagia

Excessive uterine bleeding occurring at the expected intervals of the menstrual periods. The bleeding from the uterus starts on schedule but is heavier than usual and may last longer than usual.

Menometrorrhagia

Excessive uterine bleeding, both at the usual time of menstrual periods and at other irregular intervals.

Measles immunization

The standard MMR vaccine is given to prevent measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). The MMR vaccine is now given in two dosages. The first should be given at 12-15 months of age.

Mastectomy

A general term for removal of the breast, usually to remove cancerous tissue. The operation can be done in a hospital or in an outpatient clinic, depending on how extensive it needs to be.

Masochism

The derivation of pleasure from one's own pain. Masochism is considered a sexual disorder (paraphilia). Named after the 19th-century Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.
