Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Lymphocytes

A small white blood cell (leukocyte) that plays a large role in defending the body against disease. Lymphocytes are responsible for immune responses.

Lymphedema

A condition in which excess fluid collects in tissue and causes swelling. Lymphedema may occur in the arm or leg after lymph vessels or lymph nodes in the underarm or groin are removed.

Lymph node

One of many small, bean-shaped organs located throughout the lymphatic system.

Lubricant

An oily or slippery substance. A vaginal lubricant may be helpful for women who feel pain during intercourse because of vaginal dryness.

Locomotion

Movement from one place to another. And the ability to locomote, to get from one place to the next.

Local therapy

In the context of cancer, treatment that affects cells in the tumor and the area close to it. Also known as local treatment.

Leukoplakia

A white spot or patch on the mucous membranes in the mouth (for instance, inside the cheeks, on the gums, on the tongue) that may become cancerous.

Leucemia

A different spelling of leukemia, cancer of the blood cells. The growth and development of the blood cells are abnormal.

Kwashiorkor

A childhood disease that is caused by protein deprivation. Early signs include apathy, drowsiness, and irritability.

Krukenberg tumor

A tumor of the ovary that is caused by the spread of metastatic cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, characteristically from the stomach.
