Ergot

A fungus (Claviceps purpurea) that contaminates rye and wheat and that produces substances (alkaloids) called ergotamines.

Arthrogryposis

Joint contractures that develop before birth and are evident at birth. With arthrogryposis there is a lack of the normal range of motion in one or more joints.

Syndrome, Eagle

Inflammation of the styloid process, a spike-like projection sticking off the base of the skull. The tissues in the throat rub on this structure during the act of swallowing causing pain.

Eagle syndrome

Inflammation of the styloid process, a spike-like growth that projects out of the base of the skull.

Syndrome, Cogan

A form of arteritis (also referred to as vasculitis) that involves the ear.

Cogan syndrome

A rare form of artery inflammation (arteritis) of unknown cause that affects the ear.

Condition, Sever

Inflammation of the growth plate of the calcaneus, the bone at the back of the heel. The inflammation is at the point where the Achilles tendon attaches.

Apophysitis calcaneus

Also called Sever's condition, this disorder is due to inflammation of the growth plate of the calcaneus, the bone at the back of the heel.

Peritonsillar abscess

A collection of pus behind the tonsils that pushes one of the tonsils toward the uvula.

Crypt

In anatomy, variously a blind alley, a tube with no exit, a depression, or a pit in an otherwise fairly flat surface. For example, the tonsillar crypts are little pitlike depressions in the tonsils.
