Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Disease, coronary artery

A major cause of illness and death, coronary artery disease (CAD) begins when hard cholesterol substances (plaques) are deposited within a coronary artery.

Coronary artery disease

Impedance or blockage of one or more arteries that supply blood to the heart, usually due to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Abbreviated CAD.

Antibacterial

Anything that destroys bacteria or suppresses their growth or their ability to reproduce. Heat, chemicals such as chlorine, and antibiotic drugs all have antibacterial properties.

Sporotrichosis

An infection caused by the fungus Sporothrix schenckii, typically involving the skin. Persons handling thorny plants, sphagnum moss, or baled hay are at increased risk of developing sporotrichosis.

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis

A disorder, also called Kikuchi disease, that typically causes "swollen glands" in the neck (cervical lymphadeniopathy) together with fever or flu-like symptoms.

Brain cancer

Cancer of the central information processing center of the body. Tumors in the brain can be malignant or benign, and can occur at any age. Only malignant tumors are cancerous.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), one of a potent class of medications used to treat depression.

Antidepressant, tricyclic (TCA)

One of a class of medications used to treat depression. The tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are also used for some forms of anxiety, fibromyalgia, and the control of chronic pain.
