Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Toxic multinodular goiter

A condition in which the thyroid gland contains multiple lumps (nodules) that are overactive and that produce excess thyroid hormones. Also known as Parry disease and Plummer disease.

Tooth, cracked, syndrome

A toothache caused by a broken tooth (tooth fracture), without associated caries (cavities) or advanced gum disease. Biting on the area of tooth fracture can cause severe, sharp pains.

Thyroxine

A hormone that is made by the thyroid gland and is one of the most important thyroid hormones. Four iodine molecules are attached to the molecular structure of thyroxine.

Thyrotropin

A hormone produced by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain in response to signals from the hypothalamus gland in the brain. The suffix -tropin indicates "an affinity for".

Thyroid stimulating hormone

A hormone produced by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain in response to signals from the hypothalamus gland in the brain.

Thyroid hormones

Chemical substances made by the thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck.

Thoracic outlet syndrome

A condition that is due to compromise of blood vessels or nerve fibers between the armpit (axilla) and the base of the neck, because of compression by adjacent tissues.

Tetanus

An often fatal infectious disease that is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which usually enters the body through a puncture, a cut, or an open wound.

Tension

1) The pressure within a vessel, such as blood pressure: the pressure within the blood vessels. For example, elevated blood pressure is referred to as hypertension.
