Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Chilblain

An injury due to cold temperatures that, although painful, causes little or no permanent impairment. It appears as red, swollen skin that is tender and hot to the touch and may itch.

Chest pain

Pain in the chest that can be a result of many things, including angina, heart attack (coronary occlusion), and other important diseases.

Chemoprevention

The use of natural or laboratory-made substances to prevent cancer.

Chemokine

One of a large group of proteins that act as chemical messengers and were first found attracting white blood cells to areas of inflammation.

Chancre

The classic painless ulcer of syphilis. The chancre forms in the first (primary) stage of syphilis. It is highly contagious and can last 1-5 weeks.

Cervical dystocia

Difficult labor and delivery caused by mechanical obstruction at the cervix. Dystocia comes from the Greek "dys" meaning "difficult, painful, disordered, abnormal" + "tokos" meaning "birth."

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia

The growth of abnormal precancerous cells on the surface of the cervix. Grades from one to three (least to most) may be used to describe the degree of involvement.

Cavities

Holes in the two outer layers of a tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath enamel.

Causes of cancer

Causes of cancer. In most individual cases, the exact cause of cancer is unknown.

Cartilage

Firm, rubbery tissue that cushions bones at joints. A flexible kind of cartilage makes up other parts of the body, such as the larynx and the outside parts of the ears.
