Dental impaction

The pressing together of teeth. For example, molar teeth (the large teeth in the back of the jaw) can be impacted, cause pain, and require pain medication, antibiotics, and surgical removal.

Dementia

Significant loss of intellectual abilities, such as memory capacity, that is severe enough to interfere with social or occupational functioning.

Degenerative joint disease

Also known as osteoarthritis, this type of arthritis is caused by inflammation, breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of the joints.

Degenerative arthritis

A type of arthritis caused by inflammation, breakdown, and eventual loss of the cartilage of the joints.

Deficiency, alpha-1 antitrypsin

An inherited disorder characterized by a lack of the alpha-1 antitrypsin protease inhibitor. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency leads to damage of various organs, especially the lung and liver.

Cystitis

Inflammation of the bladder. Cystitis can be due for example to infection from bacteria that ascend the urethra (the canal from the outside) to the bladder.

Cyst, pilonidal

An abscess that occurs in the cleft between the buttocks. Pilonidal cysts form frequently in adolescence after long trips that involve sitting, and they may be painful.

Cuts

Severed skin. Washing a cut or scrape with soap and water and keeping it clean and dry is all that is required to care for most wounds.

Cryptorchidism

A condition in which one or both testicles fail to move from the abdomen, where they develop before birth, down into the scrotum.

Croup

An infection of the larynx, trachea, and bronchial tubes that occurs mainly in children. It is usually caused by viruses but sometimes by bacteria.
