Start medication before diagnosis?

Do not self medicate anything beyond something that can be harmless and that includes massage therapist or chiropractor. Not all treatments are going to help someone else just because it worked out for one person. Underlying cause has to be established for effective treatment

personally if the opiates work i would try a mild one for bad days..in the uk we have otc codeine with paracetamol which i think you call tylenol.... or slightly stronger prescription strength...you can always take just 1 or half a pill .....but we are all different i hate antidepressants and they dont help me just make me feel ill.

Then you could discuss longer term pain management with the rheumy..i promise if the pain gets real bad you wont care about feeling zonk out you will be desperate for relief.

Good luck ..we all have differing opinions..i hate pain meds too and took me years to give in to something and nothing works effectively so far for me.

Yes I know exactly what is prescribed and OTC in the UK so stay away from the ghb and that krokodil drug made from OTC codeine and paint thinner gasoline that's so popular in use

Thanks for the advice, guys.
I'll see if my doc can squeeze me in this week. I'll have 3 weeks before our trip, so should hopefully have enough time to tell if it's helping or if the side effects are too much to handle.
Anti-inflammatories are NOT helping the fibro pain (does seem to help actual sore/tight muscle pain somewhat).
Also, I currently have a massive canker sore under my tongue, which is extremely painful, with added tightness/ache along the side of my neck that's giving me a headache... yey Monday...

That sounds like an infection if you have swelling in the lymph nodes.

. It seems you put some good thought into your decision Pegleg84. You are right about the side affects of Cymbalta and Savella. Why put yourself through that when other treatment plans can be implemented that do not make one miserable.

I had a terrible reaction to savella. I hope you have better luck with that

I TAKE HUGE OFFENCE AT YOUR POST cajuncamaro96...what are you talking about???? Mild otc codeine is hardly a strong drug taken now and again for severe fibromyalgia after years of taking NOTHING and now giving in because i am housebound!!!

I have none of the terrible side affects with low dose of codeine associated with anti depressants or anti epileptic drugs so commonly used.

Many people take similar like Tramadol to ease their pain.In fact Tramadol is stronger.

Its not like the things taken in the USA like percocet or vicodin neither of which i would entertain.

I dont even know what ghb or krokodil is or anything about paint thinners..please do not make such a derogatory comment to me!!!!

I think Cajuncamero96 needs to demonstrate more discernment before commenting about other forum members treatment and meds. Many of the members here have already tried many treatments. Many also have different degrees of severity. Each member has no doubt thought long and hard on their specific treatment modalities. It is not OUR JOB to criticize or find fault on such treatment decisions.

Cajun, you may offer encouragement to domestic abuse clients. You may offer support to substance abuse clients. Unless you are a Dr, Psychiatrist, Pharmacist, or Specialist, perhaps you need to limit your advice to encouragement. This is what this forum is about. Encouragement!!!! Hang your shingle somewhere else please.

Codeine is a narcotic used to treat mild to moderate pain and as a cough suppressant. Tramadol, also a narcotic is used to treat moderate to severe pain as in musculoskeletal pain which is why it is a good choice for FMS patients. Tramadol is definitely a stronger narcotic. In Canada, we can buy codeine non RX, as T-1. And no, it does not contain GHB or Krokadil. (Desomorphine)

It is also available in slightly higher strengths on prescription..but is a controlled drug and has to be signed for at the doctors surgery ( office) or pharmacy to make sure there is no abuse by any one who may have a drug problem...and all prescriptions are recorded at both the pharmacy and doctors surgery by a patient number that is given from birth.

The highest prescription strength 30mg is still weaker than 50mg Tramadol

We don't go from doctor to doctor...all our medical notes from birth until we die are kept in one place even if we move house they follow us to our next doctor with whom we must register. No one else except a hospital consultant/doctors can prescribe anything at all and that is also added to our notes held forever with our General Practitioner.

In the UK medication is strongly regulated.

I have had one highly qualified general practitioner for 14 years...no one is going to as you say....'write you some drug that kills u because it was meant to clear a drain'....we have NO doctors here who do this...it would be impossible..everything in our medical profession is highly regulated...and aside from anything else i wouldn't entertain or take anything vaguely of the sort you describe.

So you think that because of sounding difference between strength makes it stronger? Everything here is federal regulation with all prescription drugs. The pharmacy are all linked together and Dr shopping doesn't happen here. I have friends in the UK and I have studied much about it. I do know a little more about it than you think I do. Most illicit drugs in this country are not nearly as bad as what you live around and I am very sorry for that on your behalf and I do apologize for offending u.

Sorry but i cant respond any further..i do not 'live around' any illegal drug use. I live in a beautiful location with a highly qualified neuro surgeon and 2 retired general practitioners as my neighbours among other professionals and I was a well respected Bank Manager....please don't paint the UK as some kind of illicit drugs haven. I dont know any illegal drug taker or abuser and never have.

I wont be drawn on this subject any further.

Pegleg84, i think you have made a wise decision and i am pleased to hear the pain is not debilitating ... it is always best to be thoroughly investigated and discuss all meds with your practitioner weighing up side affects against the benefits.
