I've ordered a magnesium oil spray that I want to try out for pain relief. I read some posts about people who have used magnesium oil with success for RLS, but frankly there were too many posts and comments for me to go through scanning for relief from pain from FMS.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has used magnesium oil and had a positive experience with it for pain relief. That may be nobody. LOL. But I am hopeful. I'm going to try it anyway since I already ordered some, but someone may have advice about how much they used, how often, what time of day or night, application, etc. My initial plan is to use 6 sprays total on arms and legs before bedtime. This will give me 100mg of magnesium in addition to the 300mg I already take orally at bedtime. I'm trying this because of comments I've read from FM sufferers elsewhere, and the fact that magnesium is better absorbed through the skin than the digestive tract lining.

Anyway, it's just my latest 'tryout' of something new. Sometimes I'm too impatient to test out the next thing on my list. I probably should be waiting at least 2 months before starting the magnesium oil since I just started turmeric capsules. Desperate times, eh?

Thanks in advance for reading this and for any feedback. Y'all are great.

Never tried that, myself, @JamieMarc, but please let us know if/how it works for you. I would be very interested to know.

I have tried something called "CBD For Life Rub" which is a sort of liniment with CBD in it. It actually does help with certain kinds of pain, some of the time. I've used it on my back and neck with some success (sometimes), but it doesn't seem to help with my leg pain.

@JamieMarc
I use pure magnesium oil spray often. It has helped me stop RLS in its tracks by applying it to my shins and calves. Also, if I have sore muscles in my back, I have my husband spray it down my back after a hot shower. It needs to be rubbed in, and if your skin is warm it's absorbed even better. It's even ok to use a heating pad with it on. I get pretty good relief, enough that I'm on my 4th or 5th bottle (4 oz). I've also used it on my wrists, elbows and ankles. I don't measure how much and I'll use it any time of day, but mostly in the evening. Hope this is of some help.

@sunkacola Actually not sure, because I get it from my chiropractor. But I'll try to find out.
That might sound odd. I think he gets a large quantity and fills clear bottles, so there's no actual label.

@30 plus years thanks for your reply. It does help a lot. My only problem is I have nobody to spray it on my back and rub it in, because I really wanted to use it there as well. But maybe I can get creative and find some way.
I appreciate your feedback and I'm looking forward to see what it does for me.

@sunkacola I ordered the ancient minerals brand. I did my research and they are a reputable company. They have a website, but I found that it was cheaper for me to order through Amazon since I have a prime account, no shipping cost. I decided to start with the 4 oz smallest bottle.
I will let you know how it works for me, and thank you for the info on the CBD for Life rub. I'm going to add that to my list of things to check out in the future.

Be interested in the outcome of this as well. I do sometimes use Epsom salts ( magnesium sulfate ) in warm water when my haands are particularly bad, but its not exactly convenient to do this all day long... The spray oil sounds a good way to absorb into the skin.
Let us know how it goes 😁

Thank you, @JamieMarc . I will look that up on Amazon. I don't do "prime", but always just wait until I have the minimum to order and get free shipping. :)

Yes, try the magnesium oil spray....it helps the muscle pain, cramps, RLS, and PLMD, so it's easier for
me to go to sleep. I spray it all over right before bedtime. (I'm 75 years old, and was diagnosed when I was
40; tried many remedies over the years, so I'm an "old pro" at the unrelenting pain.) The magnesium spray is
not a "cure-all", but does help a little, and I need every bit of relief I can get!!!!!

@Mary Alice Long I am an oldy at this too 56 yrs which makes me 76 yrs. Magnesium oil is something I have not tried. So reading your thread I will try it. I manage my FM quite well these days. Hated all the stress at work! Now in a volunteer job once a wk 3 hours. Love life. I treat all my FM woes seperately.

I tried the magnesium oil spray last night at bedtime for the first time.

I applied 2 sprays to each arm, 3 sprays to each leg and tried to rub some on my lower back. I also already take magnesium capsules at bedtime, 300mg. Here was my initial experience just for expediency to those who have asked me to share my experience. But I will post again after I have used it for several weeks.

What I noticed most was a feeling of calm relaxation. Overall, I felt more comfortable getting into bed and finding a comfortable sleep position was quick and easy. Typically, I toss and turn when I first get into bed trying to find the most comfortable position for me since that position varies from night to night. My pain from FMS is always returning at bedtime. My worst times of day are mornings (the very worst) and then early evening to bedtime. I also take tizanidine, 4mg, at bedtime and I am on a prescription of clonazepam, 1mg, 3x daily, with my last dose taken at dinnertime (around 6 PM). I always go to bed at 9 PM, watch TV for one hour, then shut off everything and go to sleep at 10 PM.

As I said, the most noticeable difference I felt after using the magnesium oil spray for the first time was calmness, relaxation and sleepiness. It kicked in FAST, proof that it is indeed absorbed better through the skin. I don't typically have trouble falling asleep (I practice mindful breathing), but I DO always have difficulty getting comfortable, as I said. Finding the most comfortable sleeping position that I can. Many nights it can take up to 30 minutes or even longer to get comfortable in bed. Sometimes my leg are bothering me (I have long suspected I have RLS, too). With the magnesium oil, I found a comfortable sleeping position FAST, and I was not restless at all. Just calm and relaxed and sleepy...serene. It was like all of my tension just melted away.

I did notice a slight, very mild headache in my temples and base of my skull, but it wasn't enough to prevent me from falling asleep fast. I don't normally get headaches. I cannot say whether the magnesium oil caused that or not...too soon. Could have been something completely different. I will know more as I continue to use the spray. I will also experiment with using it during the day.

I have learned that it doesn't really matter whether you apply it to your arms, legs, back, torso. The skin absorbs it and transports it throughout the body, just like a fentanyl patch or transdermal testosterone, for example. I don't like it on my hands because of the sticky feel (thought I'd try it out in the morning for my hand inflammation and stiffness every morning). So I don't recommend applying it to the hands. There's no reason to since it will be transported systemically throughout the body. It rinses off easily with just plain water after you have used your hands to rub it into the skin. I didn't mind the stickiness on my arms or legs at all; didn't even notice it. I would suggest that you apply the oil before applying anything thicker, like skin lotion. Perhaps even wait 30 minutes before applying skin lotion.

The brand I am using also makes different formulations in creams or lotions, but they won't deliver the same amount of magnesium. I will consider switching depending upon whatever I determine to be the right number of sprays (dosage) for me. But I think the oil spray would probably last longer and be a better value for your money. The lotion would be best for someone with sensitive skin, probably. They also sell a formulation of magnesium and MSM, bath flakes and other products. As mentioned in my prior post, I am using the oil spray by Ancient Minerals. They have an official web site where you can browse their products for yourself to see what might be best for you or what you might be most interested in, if anything.

Tonight I am going to use less to see if it has the same effect without the mild headache. I'm only 140ish pounds anyway, plus I take oral magnesium and eat foods high in magnesium already. Tonight I'm going to use one spray on each arm, one on each leg and one on each side of my torso, less sprays than I used the first night.

At only $11.95 for a 4 oz bottle, I read that I could get up to 90-100 uses, so I think it's very affordable for anyone. Of course, if I decide to use it twice a day, then perhaps 50-60 uses. It's still one of my cheapest supplements either way. They do have larger sizes, but I didn't want to spend more until I judged its effectiveness for me and my own unique "brand" of FMS.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised the first night.

@ Jamie Marc thanks for the info. I will give iitca try. Ta

@JamieMarc , thanks for the detailed report! I think I may try it, although the stickiness on my skin might be annoying to me. Did it come off on or stain your sheets at all? that would be an issue for me. Of course, if it truly helped with pain, comfort, and sleep it would be worth it, so I am just wondering. And maybe I could apply it an hour before bedtime to give it time to be absorbed, so that it wouldn't come off on the sheets.
Thanks again for letting us know your experience.
