Chemical imbalance in brain is cause of Fibro?

I saw my Rheumatologist today for a quarterly check up.

We have tried Cymbalta--bothered my kidneys and created worse leg cramps/spasm/twitching.

Then he put me on Lyrica--that stuff is nasty, expensive and created mental health issues, he then added Lexapro and it caused heart palpations.
He also added Tramadol. I can have the Tramadol 3 times a day. I take it in the most extreme pain days and only half a pill.

I can't take Gabapentin- as far as I'm concerned that stuff is an evil evil drug.

So today, he said no to Savella-he considers it a sister to Cymbalta.

He is sending me to pain management since I can't take the meds. I have multiple auto immune issues and most meds don't work on me and I have some severe/weird side effects. My husband asked him was this because of my immune system, Dr. said no.

He said the tramadol only masks the issue, it doesn't deal with the cause. I asked what was the cause of Fibro? He said Fibro is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and if that imbalance is dealt with, it helps the Fibro.

I am going to research this. Has anyone else been told this or found this researching? Adding synthetic chemicals doesn't deal with the cause?

This is a very interesting thought. Since Fibro causes so many random symptoms etc. Most of what I have researched so far shows that they dont really know what causes it. There are alot of theories out there and many makes sense. It seems like different things set it off for different people. I think mine was set off by the menopause process at least in part. I have found others feel like theirs was too. So possibly hormonal changes are a factor. I too plan to research on this some as well. I am always researching for non prescription med ways of treatment. Seems like the meds add to some of the issues. Thank you for presenting this idea!!

My opinion: That doctor thinks a bit too highly of himself. If he "knows" the cause of Fibro, then he is the only person in the world who does, and he should start writing papers about it!
Of course, he won't, because he doesn't know that any more than anyone else knows.

Often, a doctor will just say something to you when you ask a question, they will say whatever, because no doctor wants to admit that they don't know the answer.

I'm sorry to hear that you're suffering and none of the usual drugs work for you. It's GREAT that he's sending you to pain management. They will probably be much more knowledgeable about how to deal with your symptoms because they've seen so many more cases. My pain clinic had several ideas as to how to deal with the fibro symptoms as well as pain treatments (including CBD oil). Your dr. doesn't know what causes fibro, or he'd have the cure we're all looking for. Maybe it's caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, my fibro symptoms started after a concussion.

Sadly Tramadol LP, has too many side effects. I had been using it for years, until a discussion at my aqua therapy session, raised the addiction effect.
Im very strong willed, so i stopped taking tramadol except for my ixprim, combination of paracetamol and tramadol for fast relief if i get too much pain when in public.
So i have to ignor pain, and teach myself how to mentally blick it out, its not easy but i have finally recovered from the tramadol side effects.
Sadly ive started getting this hot/cold leg sensation when im in bed in the mornings. Its very annoying and painfull, i just keep squirming and rubbing my legs together. I usually go back to sleep and loose another 3 or 4 hours. The usual feeling of being more tired on awakening than when i went to bed, sems to coinside with the leg pain. Despite getting up every morning to make breakfast in bed for my wife and i, im so sleepy afterwards i just roll over and sleep for another 3 or 4 or even 6 hours hours. Wasting half the day or more. But when i really force myself to get up for anything, appointments etc, and have a hot shower, my leg pain goes.
This is far more important and productive, than staying in bed. But by setting an alarm for say 1 hour you can gain some relief and feel better afterwards. But get up and out of bed is a must.
You have to train yourself to believe that benefits of getting up are far better than giving in and falling asleep.
Like wise, the going to bed very late, is not helping even if you don't feel tired.
Its very important to set your mind up to the jobs you want to do that day and get up, rather than give in

Very interesting. Might be the cause. I had Tramadol shots when I went to the ER serveral times at 10 pain level. I now have kidney disease beccuse of the Tramaol. I went thur a pain management program, that and swimming in a pool heated very high. (not a gym pool) saved me. It took many years but I function well most of the time now. Good Luck!

Good for you. I agree that sometimes you need to force yourself to get up and out but it is worth it. Especially the part about training yourself to believe that the benefits are worth it, and the only way to do that is to do it. You said it well.

Self-affirmation is very important. It affects how we feel about ourselves and eventually when we have trained our mind positively, we get to live a healthy and happy life.

I wish it were that easy. Maybe it is for some people, I don't know. But I don't think it's possible to train our minds sufficiently that we can be positive all the time, or that it would work for everyone to make them happy.

Unfortunately some people do have chemical imbalances in their brains causing mental illness such as severe depression, and others have experienced trauma which also affects the brain chemistry. Some folks have both, as I do. In this case, it is definitely possible to train oneself to manage the mental issues, but not possible in most cases to train the mind positively enough to get over those conditions. I know this because I spent decades of my life trying to do that very thing, mostly without any success. I have learned to manage it for the most part, although these days of terrible things happening in the world have made it bad enough that the usual managing techniques are not working.
