Fibromyalgia Medical Terms and Definitions

Aerotitis

Middle ear problems due to changing atmospheric pressures, as when a plane descends to land. Symptoms include ear pain, ringing ears, diminished hearing and, sometimes, dizziness.

Aerosinusitis

Painful sinus troubles due to changing atmospheric pressures. Aerosinusitis is the cause of sinus pain when going up or down in a plane. Also known as barosinusitis and sinus barotrauma.

Adjuvant therapy

Treatment that is given in addition to the primary (initial) treatment. Adjuvant treatment is an addition designed to help reach the ultimate goal.

Adenocarcinoma

A cancer that develops in the lining or inner surface of an organ and usually has glandular (secretory) properties. More than 95 percent of prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas.

Actinic keratosis

Rough, scaly patches of skin that are considered precancerous and are due to sun exposure. Prevention is to cut sun exposure and wear sunscreen.

Acquired mutation

A genetic change that occurs in a single cell after the conception of an individual. That change is then passed along to all cells descended from that cell.

Achilles tendon

One of the longest tendons in the body, a tough sinew that attaches the calf muscle to the back of the heel bone (calcaneus).

Achalasia

A disease of the esophagus that mainly affects young adults. Abnormal function of nerves and muscles of the esophagus causes difficulty swallowing and sometimes chest pain.

Abscess, peritonsillar

An abscess behind the tonsils that pushes one of the tonsils toward the uvula (the prominent soft tissue dangling from the back of the palate in the back of the mouth).
