I recently was referred to a narcotic pain specialist and got my appointment for next week. I am currently taking percocet for my pain and symptoms and it seems to be the only thing that gives me mild relief.

I am feeling a bit anxious about this appointment, and wondering what to expect. I would be devastated if the doctor were to change my pain medication.... Do they generally listen to what is helping you and try to manage that? I really don't think I could survive without it at this point in time. My GP is really good, and says that he does not want me to be in pain. I try to only take this medication once a day to avoid addiction and so that I do not develop a tolerance to it. Imagining no relief at all or changing my meds makes me very worried and anxious.

Thanks, hope everyone is feeling ok this evening.

Try to relax love, your going there because your in so much pain for one thing. They might give you something better.if they don't just stand your ground and make sure they understand what u need. Your be ok xx

Take deep breaths! My pain doc. is my favorite doc! He is quite compassionate. In fact I read an article that Pain Specialists are usually the most compassionate of all doctors, and Surgeons & CEO's had the least. Mine has come up with other things that really help my chronic pain and I may soon be able to get off my drug patch!
Blessings!

Thanks guys,

hope your right and thats a huge relief :)

Give as much information as you can. Write down what you are going to say to the doctor. Don't ask for meds. If the meds your currently taking is helping you don't have to change them, just change doctor.
Don't be disappointed if this doctor does not wish to help you. Most do not want to prescribe meds. Most want to give you a shot in their neck for deadening the pain for six months. Doctors believe that it is a privilege not a right to see them. Remember to ask for your money back and make sure they do not charge you for the Visit on you insurance.
Its your choice of doctors that you feel you can work with.
Your in control not the doctor. There are hundreds of Pain mgt places out there. Stay strong and know you may see several doctors before you find the right one.
