Hi all.
I was diagnosed with FM last month. I've had symptoms for years, but no doctor would give me a diagnosis. I was sure I had it as I have a lot of the symptoms (fatigue, trouble sleeping, tingling in my fingers and toes, pain in every joint, frequent headaches, stiffness of I remain stationary for more than a few minutes) and my mother has it.
I was finally asked to take a test by my new doctor and scored 9 and 14 (5 or more and 7 or more will give a diagnosis).
The strange thing is, even though I was sure I had FM, after my diagnosis I began having severe symptoms. I now have pain almost daily, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, etc. I've never heard of FM having flares. I'm thinking I may be having one though.
Also, why do so many people talk about going to a rheumatologist? My doctor told me FM is not a rheumatic disease.

Hi purplechicken74,

I think that for most of us, fibro is all about flares and trying to keep them at bay! While symptoms don't tend to ever go away, figuring out how to avoid triggering a flare of pain/bran fog etc. is the juggling act that usually comes with this condition. I suppose its possible that your emotional response to finally receiving a diagnosis triggered you in some way? One of the most frustrating things is that each of us seem to experience fibro uniquely, so we each have to do the groundwork to figure out what impacts how we feel either positively or negatively, and steer our daily lives based on that.

My understanding of the rheumatologist recommendation is that although fibromyalgia isn't a true rheumatological condition, its symptoms align with many conditions in this field - and rheumatologists tend to follow the latest fibro developments more than any other specialist. They are also well versed to assess/rule out any complex/overlapping issues. I think that's the idea at least!

Hay hun, totally normal to feel more pain after being told .think about it .before you knew you just had a feeling.so your body and brain could Cancel a lot of it out. Then bang you find out .Now your brain and body react ,
The pain kicks in. There nothing stopping your brain from holding back the pain anymore.now I know I’m saying this is Psychological .But believe me the pain was always there ,you just held it back out of Share Determinism because you didn’t believe 100% you had it.x
