How many of us go to a counselor either as a part of treatment with your MD or voluntarily on your own. I personally believe this is a big part of my success with Fibro management. I believe others can benefit from it as well. So, lets share and see where this thread can go. Maybe we will help ourselves or someone else.

I did go to counseling for several years. I had depression from job loss and PTSD from my marriage. I knew that between the fibro and my sadness over past and things happening in my life if I did not seek out help I might not survive my state of mind. So I went and got counseling and under went a treatment called EMDR, and am much stronger for it.

If you want counseling most towns and cities have government run mental health centers. If you want counseling on a individual level then do a web search for therapists.psychologytoday and a page will come up that will give you listings in the United States and Canada. You can scroll down and click on the different cities if you want to. this way you know where the counselor is and what they look like and all about their training, as well as, types of therapy they do. Good luck! :)

So many people want me to go to a physcologist. I am dragging my feet as I dont like talking about my feelings and havent had good experiences with shrinks. Any suggestions.

Counseling is required at my Fibro doctor's office and, I see one there who specializes in that type of couseling. But, you can look online and find a reputable one in your area who also specializes in something similar or at least has experience with it. It truly has made a world of difference in my life. And, has made a positive impact in my overall health and daily quality of life. It is a way to get all those empty feelings and thoughts out of my head and, to deal with them via the help of a trained professional.

I see a therapist once a month, but to be honest it hasn't helped me that much, I truly need to see a better one, the one I see is so darn useless... I believe counseling can do so much good, but you need to find the right one. It always go down to that.

snckrs,
I would say to you most of us do not like talking with others about our personal lives or our illness. But with the right therapist, it can do wonders for your mental health. Most good therapists let you lead the conversation. Yes, they do ask some questions, but they don't pry into your life but wait for you to start talking about what is causing you the most anxiety and stress.

They have different treatments and (not drugs), but ways of showing you how to handle the things in your life that are a burden to you. Look around and go online, talk to friends in the health business or your doctor, to find someone. If you don't like the one you 1st pick, move on.
It will do you a lot of good to find someone you trust and someone who is concerned about your well-being.

I hope this helps answer your question. :) :)

I am in counseling but not for Fibromyalgia. I should probably start talking about it or find a support group. Before, I moved I attended a Fibromyalgia support group. Having someone to talk who really understand can be helpful. That another reason why forums like this are so important.

The perfect counselor will not only talk about private issues but, all things that effect you mentally. They will help you work through ways to not let this disease take control of you mentally and physical. I am very happy with mine. I journal daily about my physical and mental issues at his order. It truly helps. But, ibhave enjoyed all of your opinions on this thread and, can't wait to read more of them.

I go to counseling not because of my pain issues but instead because of the fact that I've had to deal with depression and PTSD through my life. One thing that I've gotten out of going to counseling is that I really feel like it is something that can help absolutely anyone. We all have some issues that are buried somewhere within us and counseling is the only thing that will help us to overcome those issues.

I think that going to a counselor if you are having problems in any area is a great idea. Some times life throws curve balls at us that we are just not ready for. The best thing to do is to go to a professional who can help. A professional that has witnessed what you are going through. They can help to better prepare you for what lies ahead.

I believe it does help out a lot, because it helps you deal with it, and come to terms with it, it also helps you accept that you have this condition ,and how to deal with life after being diagnised.

Counseling has been such a blessing to me. The people who can benefit from it are more than just those of us with Fibro. It is a part of my Medical Treatment at my Doctors office. It is the best thing that has happened to me, ever. I wish all of you the best with it as well.

Why don't you join a group of fellow sufferers who feel similar as you do? It can be so therapeutical and healing just to do some things together, like going for regular walks or preparing a meal together. There is no need to talk about one's feelings or ailments, but just about whatever come up. It just helps to know that one is not alone with the pain.
