I have had Fibromyalgia for 2 and a half years, I won my case against Social Security. The problem is that Social Security doesn't want to give me any backpay. I have racked up quite alot of credit card debt because I was unable to work for so long. Anyone have any answers on how to deal with Social Security on this issue?

Hi @Bergie87 . I have not actually ever heard of anyone getting "back pay" from Social Security. It is my understanding that they will only pay you from the date that you were approved going forward. However, I don't know these things for certain, and what you need is an attorney. Find someone who is a specialist in the field and ask them if such a thing is possible. If it is, you will probably need the attorney's assistance to file the claim.

Thank you for your response. I do have an attorney. Most people who have been disabled for as long as I have usually do get back pay. They usually pay some type of back pay. I have been disabled for 2 and a half years, I have proof of my disability from seeing Rheumatologist and a Nerosurgeons since February 2023. Social Security say I have only been disabled since February 6, 2024. I was hoping someone on this forum could tell me how they dealt with this issue. According to my attorney, he knows that Social Security does not like to pay any back pay because it saves then thousands of dollars. I can go to court and dispute this, but my attorney says that will take another 8 to 12 months to fight. Thank you anyone that can help.

Hi there - so glad to hear someone finally won against Social Security. I’m currently fighting them and have had to hire an attorney because they keep saying stupid stuff like I can still move my outer extremities. As far as you not getting back pay, that is absolutely ridiculous! I hope you have luck getting it. It is so incredibly frustrating to see how the government, that we pay into, has little regards to the people that need assistance.. and oh my gosh, what they even payout is so little that if you don’t have some sort of other income, most wouldn’t be able to afford to live. Good luck to you! I hope it all works out for you.

I hope that it works out for you. Please feel free to post here whether it does or not, because the information could help others who are in your position.
Also, know that people on this forum are here to be supportive and, if we can be, helpful.

I agree that the systems here, the health care system, the VA system, the Social Security system, are all so deeply flawed that they are dysfunctional for thousands of people, and this is a real shame.

Social Security was never designed or intended to be something for people to live on in the first place. But the fact is that the way things are, and increasingly becoming more so, it has become virtually impossible for the ordinary person in the working class to get enough money ahead to have investments to live on in retirement, and pensions (if a person is fortunate enough even to have one) have a nasty habit of disappearing. So we have hundreds of thousands of people who are trying to live on SS. People who worked hard their whole lives and now are in poverty, and for most of them it's through no fault of their own.
I sure don't know what the solution would be other than revamping the entire system, which isn't likely to happen.

Horrible nasty day for me. I admit today is a bit of a struggle. I know I will feel better, and optimistic soon but it's just one of those days when I just feel what next? How much more am I able to have piled on?

Went for blood test and BP yeterday. The blood was specifically to check testosterone levels. And I said as much to the nurse. Today my results show they checked for oestrogen levels instead. Which will mean I need to go for another appt so they do it correctly. And thanks to the chronic fatigue I can no longer do the 40 minute walk to the surgery,so I have to go by car. Which reminds me so clearly I cannot exercise enough anymore. And I miss that more than anything. Two hour long happy walks.

And my blood pressure has rocketed. So why not throw that in with the fibromyalgia, the osteoarthritis, the probable rheumatoid arthritis, the IBS, the hiatus hernia, the perimenopause from Hell and anything else that can be thrown at me.

Many of which can be helped by exercise which I can't do enough of because when I do too much I am shattered for hours if not days.

Vicious vicious circle. Throwing myself a pity party because whilst I know I will get over this new obstacle and find even more strength to face things positively, right now I feel overwhelmed again.

Rant over. Needed that outlet. 🙄
I send my wishes for you all to have the best day you can. 😁

when one of my friends got approved for social security disability, she got quite a few years worth of back pay, I think for how long she'd been trying to get it. (it caused a bit of a dilemma for her, considering the savings limitations...)

I wish you luck
