Hello everyone! First I should introduce myself, I'm Laura, I don't myself have fibromyalgia, but I have friends that do. I have MS, diagnosed for around 5 years, have had symptoms for 15. I was an actor for 20 years, but have recently reframed my work to focus on applied theatre - which is where theatre practice is used in the community for education and social change.
I've created a project called The How Are You Project - which is currently in development. The project interrogates the everyday narrations of health specifically for people with non-visible disabilities. Looking at the many 'versions' we tell as a response to the question "How are you?", constantly navigating which version you want to give, or people want to hear – exploring the experience of 'explaining' health or even avoiding explaining!
I use theatre games and exercises to discover the 'testimonies' of the project's participants. I work online (on zoom) in short group workshops, as well as one-to-one. The aim is to create a piece of theatre using the testimonies from these sessions. It is simultaneously aimed at providing a supportive space and experience for all participants.
I am currently looking to expand the project's community. Crucially I want to work with people from all backgrounds and ages, to achieve the biggest range of 'voices' for the testimonies. Any use of testimonies will be after full consent from the participants – and actors will be used in the performance, so anonymity is assured.
I would love to hear from anyone on this forum that might be interested in participating in the workshops or one to one sessions! I sincerely hope that I am posting in the right area of this forum so as not to cause offence. I can of course provide more information following any interest. Please get in contact with me and I would love to tell you more.
Thanks so much for reading! Laura
